Original Medicare leaves big gaps in dental, vision, and hearing, the everyday care you actually use. A single standalone plan fills all three, usually for a surprisingly low monthly premium.
Original Medicare only covers dental, vision, and hearing when it’s tied to inpatient or outpatient medical necessity, not the routine care most people need.
Here’s the everyday care you’re mostly on your own for.
Medicare’s dental coverage is very limited, no routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, dentures, or most extractions. Supplements don’t cover these either; some Advantage plans include limited dental benefits.
In most cases Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine eye exams, glasses, or contacts. Part B pays once after cataract surgery (one standard pair), plus glaucoma screening for high-risk patients and certain diagnostic tests.
Medicare does not cover hearing aids. Part B covers some diagnostic hearing & balance exams through your primary care provider, and a portion of costs once treatment is recommended.
