What is a Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Supplements, also called Medigap policies, are sold by private insurance companies to help cover the out-of-pocket costs left behind by Medicare.

When you have a Medigap policy, Medicare pays up to its limit on your medical expenses, and then your supplement helps cover what's left, up to your plan's limit. Exactly what's covered depends on which policy you choose.

What do Medicare Supplements cover?

Original Medicare only covers 80% of your Part B expenses, the other 20% comes out of your pocket without a supplement. For a lengthy hospital stay or costly outpatient treatment, that adds up fast.

Medicare covers 80%. Your Medigap plan covers the other 20%.

What isn't covered?

A few things fall outside Original Medicare and Medigap plans:

  • Routine dental, vision & hearing exams
  • Hearing aids
  • Eyeglasses or contacts
  • Long-term or custodial care
  • Retail prescription drugs

Good news: many of these can be covered separately, ask us about Dental, Vision & Hearing and Prescription Drug plans.
